Fluoride Treatment

Prevent tooth decay before it begins

When acid-producing bacteria is left on our teeth and gums, plaque is produced and can lead to tooth decay. Without regular dental checks and good oral hygiene our teeth become highly vulnerable to tooth decay. Even with regular brushing and flossing you may have trouble reaching certain spots along your gums or in between your teeth, which is why it’s important to visit your dentist regularly. During your dental visit we can thoroughly clean your teeth while checking for possible signs of tooth decay.

Another component to good oral health is fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that can help repair teeth in the early stages of tooth decay, along with helping to prevent tooth decay before it begins. There are two ways to receive fluoride treatments; systemic and topical. Systemic fluoride is found in either fluoride supplements or from fluorinated water. Topical fluoride includes mouthwash and toothpaste, along with professional dental treatments.

At the end of your dental visit we may recommend doing one of our professional fluoride treatments, especially in children to help strengthen their teeth. These treatments vary between a foam, gel, solution, or varnish. The fluoride is quickly applied using a cotton swab on your teeth, and along the gums, and left is on your teeth. After treatment you should abstain from eating or drinking anything for about thirty minutes allowing your teeth to absorb the fluoride. Your dental hygienist will go over how often the fluoride treatments need to be done based on your oral health.
