Reduce your snoring
When a patient snores it may indicated they are suffering from sleep apnea. At Elite Smiles Dental, P.A. we recommend using a snore guard, to our patients who suffer from snoring, to help reposition the lower jaw at night allowing for your airway to open. Studies have found that patients wearing snore guards have a significant decrease in snoring then those who do not.
Snore guards are oral devices used to help keep your tongue and jaw from relaxing to the point your airway is obstructed. The two main types of dental devices to prevent against snoring are mandibular advancement devices and tongue retaining mouthpieces. Mandibular advancement devices (MADs) snap over the lower and upper dental arches and look like your average mouth guard. MADs keep the tongue from collapsing into the airway by pushing the lower jaw forward along with the tongue. Tongue retaining mouthpieces feature a small compartment that prevents the tongue from collapsing into the airway by utilizing a small compartment fitted around the tongue and holding it forward with suction.
Before you are fitted for a snore guard you may need to take part in sleep study device to determine the severity of snoring. It is important to use only snore guards provided by our dental office to ensure a proper fit. You may experience slight discomfort and an overabundance of saliva as your mouth gets used to the new device. During your routine dental visits remember to bring your sleep apnea dental appliance so that your dentist can check the fit of it, look for signs of wear and tear, and ensure it is being applied properly.
