Sleep solutions for sleep apnea and how Elite Smiles Dental, P.A. can help

Millions of people suffer from a condition called sleep apnea. This condition is a serious sleep disorder where a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep.  Most times people may notice they stop and start breathing repeatedly during sleep. It can mean the brain is not getting enough oxygen. Most patients wake up feeling tired, or wiped out, with no energy to concentrate, or function throughout the day.

Elite Smiles Dental, P.A. offers a few options for our patients to help with sleep apnea.

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) Mask:

A CPAP mask is a mask worn during sleep to treat sleep apnea. The CPAP mask works in conjunction with a machine where a hose and mask deliver constant pressure through a patient’s airway.  This pressure prevents the airway from collapsing during sleep, and allows the patient to breathe. CPAP helps patients rest so when they wake up they feel refreshed and ready to start their day.

Although CPAP masks are helpful, there are side effects that come with wearing one.  The machine is noisy, so it can wake patients or their partners up throughout the night. Also, the machine is cumbersome, so traveling with the mask and machine are not easy. Some patients may feel sore spots around the bridge of the nose or mouth while wearing the mask.

In some cases, patients are reluctant to wear the mask due to the complications associated with it. Many have to wear the mask to get relief, but for those that are looking for an alternative to wearing a CPAP mask, Elite Smiles Dental, P.A. offers another option for our patients.

Oral Sleeping Device:

Elite Smiles Dental, P.A. offers an alternative for patients that do not feel they can wear a CPAP mask, or they are simply looking for another way to help relieve sleep apnea. This oral device is fabricated to fit each patient’s mouth to be worn while they sleep at night. The device repositions the jaw forward to open up the airway, and allow the body to get the air needed naturally. The body is able to get the oxygen it needs at nighttime while wearing this oral device. Patients are able to wake up feeling refreshed because they can sleep soundly at night.

The oral device benefits many patients that do not want to wear or deal with the cumbersome CPAP mask, or loud noisy machine while sleeping.  Also, the device is easy to travel with and overall feels comfortable to wear while sleeping.
